Genetics and Breast Cancer

The first time I was diagnosed with breast cancer - Elizabeth Edwards was also traveling her own journey - She showed me what strength and positive energy really is - I admired her so much. I designed a small art quilt called "Weep No more" .

I am currently traveling a new life path with breast cancer - I am very fortunate to have a great support system which is lead by my wonderful husband Peter. My friends and relatives are incredible I am very lucky:) The medical field has advance by miles in the last four and half years, amazing tests and treatments have been discovered. Currently a pathology test is in a lab, where they are finding the DNA/Genetic make up of the tissue from this invasive tumor. The results will be " the exact treatment that will prevents this cancer from invading my body in the future" AMAZING!
My new quilt is called "Genetics". The back ground is beautiful piece of dyed leather. Specially wound yarns and bits of this and that intertwined in the yarn make up the path of the genes, the loose gold threads are pulled from a silk fabric, this makes the tumor. This quilt is still in process. I will posted the finished quilt at a later date. I feel the need to share this now:) xoxo

The Wizard
My inspiration was "Dorothy Discovers The Emerald City," an oil painting by Thomas Kincade. However my character is simply a magical Wizard that appears on the horizon. I used a stamp as a start pattern and lots of thread painting. He is holding a book of wisdom and a crystal ball.

While quilting I enhanced the upper right corner with a shadowed sun ( I hope it shows up ) there is also a quarter moon. The path was painted with a copper gloss. My goal was to have him just appear onto the quilt.

What is Yarn Bombing? On Street corners all over the world Yarn graffiti artists snake their work around telephone poles, wrap it throug barbed wire - it goes everwhere. That statue just might look great with a bright colored scarf. This is now an international guerrill knitting movement embraced by artist of all ages. As per my new fav book The Art and Crochet and Knit Graffiti , "Yarn Bombing".

Storm Survival

As per a request from Margaret here is Storm hanging on the wall!

Trees are just incredible living plants. They with stand all types of weather, droughts, storms, flooding and scorching heat. "Storm Survival" is a tree that has been damaged/ destroyed by the elements, yet it has hope with the re growth of the new leaves that show life. This was created with upholstery remnants, hand dyed roving, the tree is free form knitting. There are three layers of fabric, plus batting. The buttons represent the damage that has fallen to the ground from the storm - Your comments are appreciated:)

I am in the process of finishing this Art Quilt for Fast Friday Fabric Challenge 59

The topic of this month challenge is "to create a piece of fiber art that demonstrates solitude in a representational abstract model." When I think of solitude my favorite place to be alone is on a raft floating preferably in the ocean or any other body of water. The same solitude can be found in a swimming pool.. Close your eyes and imagine:)

Irish Words
This quilt is made up of Irish quotes, sayings and slang. The flower I found under Irish flowers ( sorry I do not have a name) the . It grows low to the ground and than the bloom pops up a bit like a crownf. The flower was fused on to the quilt and thread painted. I add a few beads and some dried foliage for effects. The Irish words were hand printed with a fabric marker. Machine quilting brought it together. Size is 24 inches by 24 inches.
I was apprehensive about the Irish theme in June. Being a free spirit I went into create mode. It was great fun looking everything up. There is is even a quote from Sandra Bullock and one from Gregory Peck. I totally enjoyed this challenge. I have never been to Ireland, however my Great Grandfather was born there.:)

Miami 1920

This is really a fun challenge. My quilt started with an Art Deco, marble candy dish. I used the figurine who sits on a marble stool as my model. I incorporated the image onto my background with an imaginary hotel sign. On the background I use oil based paint sticks, a yellow highlighted marker, embroidery and metallic threads, thread painting, stifle free motion quilting, as well as some hand stitching. To bring the piece together I framed the quilt with some trim from my stash. The letters HOTEL actually glitters with the help of a very shiny thread.

Size is tiny- width 10 inches and length 9 inches

This is an art quilt for a challenge with a group I work with " Fast Friday Fabric Challenge 56." Topic of the challenge "Rhythm & Pattern". The three rows of squares represent sky, water and earth. The Zebra is an embroidered piece, I made some time ago, It is recycled from an eye glass case that I never completed. Ha ha ha ! The quilt is small size 9" square, raw edged. backed with jean material which creates an interesting finish to the edge. Recycled scrapes form a tree on the border, threads I have collected mark the ground covering. The Zebra is taking a peek!

I started with a sketch of the curved house and path. I added the trees and lots and lots of free motion embroidery. Cotton fabrics, embroidery thread, collected threads and oil based paint sticks to highlight the sun. I just worked this as I went along

Janice, thank you for the Curvilinear Perspective:) This was a challenge for me, not sure if I got the whole perspective and depth, I think it sort of fits .I had fun learning this technique. Great idea!

Trompe L'Oeil Art Quilt

FFFC Challenge 53

As a quilting artist I loved this challenge, I have done portraits in the past - my Granddaughter at 13- with some fair results. (of course she thought it was embarrassing) However 3D was a new path for me. I started with a photo. I thread painted, used pigmented acrylic ink, fabric paint, her hair is recycled threads and yarn. This is a self portrait, which was taken in my sewing room. If you look closely my sewing machine, Beryl, is in the back ground.
I am happy with the results, I always travel to a different rhythm, I am hoping this comes close to "Trompe L'Oeil".

Fast Friday Fabric Challenge 52

What If? Do you ever wonder - are there other worlds - what are all the
stars we gaze upon, that hang in the sky and seem to stare down on us?

I wonder do they know us, who we are and what we do?

"Other Worlds 2" started with the wrong side of an upholsters scrap. I
painted the fabric with a faux metal and patina glaze. Using fabric
paints and pigmented acrylic ink I followed my vision toward a portion
of the universe. ( strictly using my imagination) Free motion
embroidery with the help of some copper fibers ( which I was able to melt) completed my challenge 52. Comments would be appreciated.
This was an excellent challenge . Working with the color fields while
attempting to create an abstract with depth and reason. TY Betty great choice for the challenge:)

Attending a wool festival in Asheville,NC I noticed a tiny cemetery tucked within the Smokey Mountains. I had just a clue about the Challenge. My mind runs in different directions So my tentative plan was autumn, leaves, cemetery and an old poem "Dear Ancestor" one of the lines is "I wonder if you knew, someday I would come to visit you ". My inspiration was born.

My Size is small 9 1/2 by 12 inches. Materials used - cotton batik fabrics,shorn/dyed wool, threads pulled from upholstery fabrics. Method free motion embroidery and quilting, needle punch

Was inspired by a photo I took with the sun setting on the beach. ( Panama Beach Florida) While I was working on the quilt my cousin Susie passed away suddenly. This quilt is for her:)
To create my quilt - I started with black cotton fabric, batting and backing with same fabric. Thread play helped create the sunset. I love dropping the feed dogs and creating free motion. I am very much a free spirit! I had this beautiful yarn from Cambodia in my stash which I just new some day it would be the sun. I free motioned this yarn to make the burst of sun. Paintsticks, fabric paints were used for the contrast on the water. I than finished the quilting by hand.

Thank you so my for asking me to join this awesome creative group. I love reviewing and admiring everyone's work. What a great experience learning about chiaroscuro:)

This mini quilt started out to be a professor, preppy professor. I made a hat was ready to put Bob the professor together. Hmmm the personality of Oliver appeared.

I drew the professor, created a hat actually fused the fabric figure to a back ground, creative thoughts appeared, he needed purple on his face and the hat had to go. Yikees!

I added lots of thread painting (free motion embroidery) Yarn, bits of this and that and threads for the hair ! I got the tie from my hubby's closet. I just used part of it and it is the under part of the tie! Shhh:(

After my guy became Oliver. I dug into my very big button collection to use as a border, with ragged edges.

This is a wall hanging made with four layers of fabric, बैटिंग bits and pieces from my stash of goodies, fish were applied with free motion embroidery. The layers help to create the ocean. A bit of distressed allows you to peek into the quilt. Sea coral and weeds are collected scrap threads and yarns and different types of fabric Including ( my favorite) upholstery scrapes:)

My Long Journey to My Brother Art
Growing up on Malibu Beach as a child of the 1950's,
I roamed the beach and hillsides of Malibu। I have very early memories of this part of my life. The beach house , at high tide the waves splashing my bedroom window. My days were my own, freedom like Tom Sawyer. I was barley out of the toddler years. There were five of us My Mother, Father Older brother and sister.

My parents were partners in a beach front restaurant with my Uncle। Things were very good for a while, they were busy with work, lots of parties our neighbors were the movie stars of that period। A life many us dream about.
I was not the only child with the luxury of freedom, my sister became pregnant at the age of 15. I remember being in my room when the big discussion took place, with the baby’s father and his parents. A scandal was happening in our lives. In the 50's such things were kept quiet and they had "homes for unwed Mothers". Babies were put up for adoption often with out the mother ever seeing her baby. I was told my sister was visiting a turkey farm. She returned home with her beautiful bundle, a baby girl. She was now an unwed Mother with a child. Not acceptable at the time.
I was ten years old my parents spiraled out of control , drinking had become a top priority for my parents, fighting was constant, my Father in a drunken stupor brought a woman home with him while my mother was a sleep. My brother Art was not sleeping he was awake and 17 years old., Dad was his step father. There was a psychical fight, Art knew his time with his family had come to an end. He left the house.
My memories after this are sketchy. The out of control lives of heavy drinking took a tole on the marriage, and the business. Everything was lost. I was sleeping one night and I was awakened by a state worker who I remember telling me my parents were killed in a car crash. I became a ward of the state and was placed in foster care. Did I grieve at the time I am not sure I do not have those memories. A lost time in my life, an absence of what happened, to destroy this family that I so needed.
Eventually, I was placed in a home with a good family. I stayed for several years and I was
taught about the printing business, attend school and lived in Santa Monica. I was ok and being taken care of. I was doing well considering I had lost my home and parents. When I was starting my junior year of high school. My sister rescued me and I move to Montana to finish high school. A new path to walk. She had since married her daughter’s Father, Doug. He was her second husband, after the birth of my niece she ran away from home and married Joe she had two more children my nephews Scott and Joey.
My life journey would take me many places, I would accomplish a lot, I never lost the anger and eventually the path I had been walking would take a new direction.

I was not sure about Art or where he was I know I saw him at some point, I knew he had been in and out jail for scuffles. I remember his firs t wife. I do remember Montana! Feeling secure with my Sister and her Family. I was loved and I loved back. We were a family my family.
I graduated from high school and moved forward। I joined the Marines - I went to the battle lines of the Vietnam War. I was a kid that learned quickly how to be a man. When I returned from the war I would , again loose my family that I loved so deeply.

My 2 cents worth -

When the Bernina 440 Sewing Machine came out, I searched for information and found a yahoo message board for the new incredible sewing machines. I saw how much everyone rated the new Bernina's 440 as positive.. I have been a member of this group since that time ,I also have one of the first 440's and of course I had lots of questions ( this was my first sewing machine) I have learned how to, what to and when to use Lucy right there. I have also participated in 2 postcards exchanges. Wow what an incredible experience. My life path has changed and I lov doing ARt Quilts. My 9 year old Grandson loves to make small free motion quilt designs. I had no idea that Postcard, Trading cards and Art Quilts even existed, or that I would be creative enough to do make things. The results of the experience of post card exchanges, showered me with beautiful ARt work from allover the world. How COOL is that.

Turning 60

My Brother Tom turned 60, 2.6 years ago, though he was not thrilled about this event, he did turn 60. I made him a beautiful southwestern log cabin quilt and named it “Turning 60 In Santa Fe”.:)

This year my son turned 40 YIKES. I could not believe it. How could he possible be 40 I was horrified. My son the attorney was 40 By the way he was not into celebrating. In his very serious manner he stated “Just another day”. So the day of his 40th birthday came very
Quietly and left.

Than July creeped into my life and it was my turn to ( believe it or not) to turn 60, oh my God I am moving toward 70 SO I decided to have own party. The last time I had a birthday party I was 12. I got on my lap top sent an email to all my relatives and friends, which I had email for. Even my former boss.

My husband and I spiffed up the house and spruced up the yard, fertilized the flowers, went to Sams and bought a super dooper cooler to hold all the drinks, mostly beer and it happened. It was a bit overwhelming everyone showed up at the same time, kind of like a receiving line. I did not have a moment to dwell on being 60. Lots of hugs and best wishes. It was a beautiful summer evening and a super party. Did we have fun? Yes we did

I think I proved turning 60 is just another day.
Love, friendship and most of all the ability to party, hardy does not end. Life goes on.. Turning 60 is just a step on my life path I am making the most of every moment:)
( I am still not sure I am 60 haha)

Racing through childhood, we look forward to the first grade, being a preteen, turning 18, freedom, love and life.
The years roll by and than fly by:)

Being a teenage Mother in the 60's, with little education ( Eventually GED and cosmetology school, which took me years to do ) I had a husband fresh back from Vietnam. He was a good provider, loved us. With the help of alcohol, thou not always needed was abusive. I walked away with my children and never looked back.

My parents had their life style and the booze. My father was associated to the Cleveland Syndicate ( My Grandfather's roots went deep in the early years of prohibition) Alcohol and lavished life style controlled my parents. I was on my own at in my mid teens. My Father died and my Mother continued her life with cocktails . I think her life would have been very different if they had prosaic and had learned to talk about menopause.

On my journey towards adulthood I was again alone this time with two children. Did we struggle? Oh YES but I did not know at the time I was struggling I was just trying to survive .We did survive - a wonderful journey. This journey reflects this in my Art. My Father taught me the love of the ocean, animals and gardening . I have a marigold garden every summer in remembering my Father. I think about my Mother often and wish I could have understood.

Thank YOU for sharing your story. My daughter has inherited a Daughter K ( her boy friend's just turned 13 daughter.) She came from a horrid living environment, Almost homeless the mother lived with whoever with her 3 daughters. K was to much to handle so she came to a new home. She knew little of the basic functions of life grooming, eating, school, She knew how to take care of her little sisters and survived in her own way. Sadly she was taken advantage of by males around her. Which she referred to as her dates. She did not know what was right or wrong.

She has come along way since her move 18 months ago. She has much needed glasses. She has been diagnosed bi-polar. She is on her med's, in school, has a counselor, she has learned to bath, primp and even has her very own bedroom.

She still has issues that will take years to heal - she interrupts, talks on and on, She fights at school and is a know it all, a bit pesty. Slowly but surely she improves as she is walk the new life path that has been given to her. I wish her peace.
